Coffee Terminology

coffee  \KOFF-ee\  noun ~ What does it mean?
1 - a drink made from roasted and ground seeds of

a tropical tree or shrub related to the madder
2 - coffee seeds or a plant producing them

Acidity is the sharp, pleasing flavor that adds life to coffee. Coffee will taste flat and dull when the acidity is too low. The acidity in coffee has no relation to the actual PH balance.

Altitude affects the balance of a coffee. Higher altitudes produce a lighter, more delicately-balanced coffee; lower altitudes create more full-bodied coffees.

Aroma is the fragrance of coffee. “Nothing could be finer” than to have
a timer on your coffee machine, and to be awakened by the aroma of fresh roasted goodness from Carolina Coffee beckoning you to start your day!

Body can be considered to give coffee a richness in taste and texture or “weight” in your mouth. The body of coffee can vary from thin to heavy—even syrupy.

Brightness refers to a higher level of acidity in the coffee, which gives it a brisk taste.

Earthy connotates a slight, smooth taste.

Rich suggests a coffee full and mellow in flavor. It also indicates a taste of complexity and depth.

Spicy is defined as a strong aroma, which creates a zesty-flavored coffee.

Tangy coffee is distinctive and has a sharp and lingering flavor.

Winey is a flavor that hints of the exhilarating taste and smooth acidity of a well-matured burgundy wine. Usually full-bodied, the aftertaste is smooth and pleasing to the palate.
