Coffee Storage - Keep it Fresh!

There is nothing like the taste of Fresh Roasted Coffee. Coffee will slowly lose its freshness because of time, exposure to air, moisture, heat, and light. It is best to buy whole bean coffee and store it at 68 to 72 degrees in an airtight container. If you have a favorite container, but it is made of clear glass, keep it in a dark place such as a cupboard. Dark colored or non-glass containers may be left on the countertop. Regardless of where you store your coffee do not put it next to the spice rack! Optimally, grind the beans right before you brew, but we usually grind a few days worth at a time.

Do Not put coffee in the refrigerator!  Have you ever tasted cheese cake that has been in the ‘fridge for a few days? It has probably has lost much of it’s flavor and even started to pick up a little of that unmistakable “fridge odor”.

Freezing your coffee is not a good idea either.  Since coffee beans are porous, they will absorb the moisture and flavors of other foods in the freezer.  The frost build-up caused by opening and closing your freezer door wreaks havoc on the beans.  During the roasting process coffee beans release oils.  The longer / darker the roast - the more oil is produced.  French Roast and Espresso beans are the darkest and have a shiny appearance.  A light roast such as the Colombian Supremo, produces very little oil. The type of bean and the oils give each coffee its distinctive characteristics.  The process of freezing will break down the oils and destroy their natural flavor.

If you keep your coffee in our special foil, one-way valve bags – roll the bag up tight and seal out all that flavor killing oxygen.  If you need a good blade coffee grinder, visit our Gift Shop to pick up one of our Braun Grinders.  Nancy and I used a trusty Braun Grinder for nearly twenty years before the on/off copper connection finally gave up the ghost!  And we drink about 3 pounds of coffee per month!!
